Stargirl book review #4

                                                            Stargirl

The book I read was Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Stargirl is a story about a boy telling the story of a girl named Stargirl. Three years earlier  Leo recieves a porcipine tie from his uncle and three years after that on Leo's Birthday, he recieves another porcipine nectie. Stargirl arrives at Mica high in Arizona and immedaintly attracts attention. Stargirl isn't exactly normal, She dresses like shes from the olden days, She carries a ukelele and plays it in the lunch room, especially if its someones birthday, and she carries a pet rat on her shoulder at school. A lot of people at mica high think Stargirl is a act, looking for attention, or is a Alien. Stargirl actually seems to start a trend, people are buying rats and playing ukeleles, but some people still seem to not like her and despise her for her differences. Suddnely people shun her for everything that makes her different, except for Leo. Leo begs Stargirl to start acting "normal" so the school will stop shunning her, Stargirl finally agrees to try being normal, but it doesn't work out. At the schools last dance a mean girl slaps Stargirl but Stargirl just kisses her on the cheek in return, then she leaves the dance with a smile on her face and moves away. Three years later after Leo goes to college and is all grown up, on his birthday he recieves a porcipine nectie in the mail.

I thought the theme of this book is to embrace your imperfections, weirdness, and differences. Like when Stargirl started the trend, other people weren't afraid to embrace their differences. You should inspire people to be different. Another example is when Stargirl wasn't afraid to sing in front of everyone in the lunch room. The theme of this book is defaintly to embrace your weirdness.

I would reccomend this book to anyone in our grade. It had really good, true quotes. I really liked it because it was so intresting and had really good details. A lot of my friends read Stargirl and  liked it. So yes I would reccomend Stargirl to anyone because it had good quotes, it had really good details, and because it was really unique.

Dialogue story

I was twelve years old and at jumprope practice. I was inside the gym at Keet and it smelled like glue and tennis shoes. I was getting tired and my feet were starting to hurt. I went over to a glass door and looked out at the hallway, it was covered with art projects, poems, pictures, and ribbons. I kind of missed being at Keet. I turned back around to look at the gym. The gym's floor was made rubber cement and smelled bad. I glanced over at my coach.
"Sophie, show me what you've practiced so far" said coach Kev
          "Ok" I answered meekly.
I started doing the tricks I practiced. I kept messing up on one trick because my feet hurt. Miss Kev looked at me and said,
"Sophie, what's going on?, lets go in the hallway"
I felt frustrated.
Once we were out in the hallway we just stood there in silence until Kev spoke up.
            "So whats up?, whats wrong?"
"My feet really hurt" I replied
"Oh, did you tell anyone they were hurting?" Kev asked.
            "No" I admitted
"Sophie you need to tell me when your feet hurt" Kev said.
"I know, I know, I'm just afraid I might dissapoint people with my "excuses" I said with a annoyed tone.
"Sophie, your not going to dissapoint people because your in pain, you shouldn't be afraid to tell people things, ok?" Kev said putting a hand on my shoulder.
             "Ok" I replied.
I went back into the gym and just sat on the bleachers. I had a feeling I wouldn't be jumping for the day.
My other coach said I should just watch for the day, and I did. That day I learned  that I shouldn't be afraid to tell anybody anything.

Leaving Protection:book review #3

                        Leaving Protection
The book I read was Leaving Protection by Will Hobbs. This book is about a 16 year old boy named Robbie who leaves his home and family at Port Protection, flies to Craig by float plane to find a summer fishing job. In Craig a girl named Julie shows Robbie around and suggests a fisherman who owns a boat called the Storm Petrel. Robbie goes to wait around for the Storm Petrel captain but he is not aboard, then curiosity takes over and Robbie decides to climb aboard and look around.  The Storm Petrel's captain (Tor Torsen) returns to find Robbie snooping around and tells him to get off his boat. Robbie thinks he has blown all chances of getting a job on the Petrel, but later that night the Storm Petrel's captain says he can come and work on his boat.  Robbie learns that the Tor has been hunting and finding old and valuable Russian plaques left from the Russian explorers.  After a few days on the boat, Robbie begins to worry that Tor might do something to him since he has found out about the Russian plaques. A powerful storm rolls in and challenges Robbie’s survival skills after Tor falls overboard trying to tie a broken trolling pole. Tor tells Robbie to gaff him in the shoulder and heave him aboard, Robbie tries and tries but finally Tor tells him to let go.  Once Robbie gets back home he tells people the news and Tor's daughter, Grace, Grace decides that Robbie's family should have the boat, Tor would've wanted them to.

I thought the theme of this book is make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. One example is Robbie climbed aboard a boat with no permission and got in trouble. Another one is Robbie went fishing with a man he didn't know and could've been dangerous, which he was. Robbie was put in danger when he found out about the antique Russian plaques that Tor didn't want him to know about. So you should always make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.

This book reminds me a lot about our own town because it involves a lot of fishing, which our town is all about. This book was very realistic and had accurate details about fishing, the ocean, and the weather. I think  fishermen would really like this book because it has so much about fishing. It had a lot about the Alaskan history of Sitka and many other places. I would recommend this book to anyone in any grade.

Book report #2: Chew On This

The book I read was Chew on This by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson.

This book is about all the fast food
industry history, The Mcdonalds brothers first came up with the Idea of opening a restaurant, They decided to call it Mcdonalds, because their last name was Mcdonald. The Mcdonald brothers came up with the idea of having a speedy service restaurant. Many other restaurants started to copy their idea of having a speedy service restaurant. These are some of the restaurants that copied Mcdonalds' idea, KFC, Taco Bell, Burger king,Sonic, Dairy Queen, and Wendy's. Mcdonalds became a big hit for the fast food industry. Mcdonalds created a speedy service system where you would get your own food, and you would have to get out of your car and walk inside to get the food. Some people weren't used to the speedy service system because they were used to people coming out to take their order, then run back in the restaurant, get  their food, and then come back out and give it to them. Mac and Ron Mcdonald wanted Walt Disney to sell Mcdonalds food at Disneyworld, Walt did not agree to selling Mcdonalds food there. Ray Kroc (a business man) met with Mac Mcdonald and wanted to help the Mcdonald business since Ray was a good business man and had some ideas to help the Mcdonalds industry.
Ray made a lot of good ideas and hopes for the Mcdonalds industry that helped Mcdonalds become what it is today.

Think about what your eating.Do you know if it could be harmful to your body. I think the theme of this book is be careful what you eat and treat your body right.

I would recommend this book to people in our grade because it was very fact filled. I think people would like this book because it's so gross but you can't stop reading it. I can relate this book with another book I read. This book contained a lot of secrets about the fast food industry, and people like secrets. I would recommend this book for all grades.

Eric Schlosser has written a few books, some of them are, fast food nation and chew on this. Eric Schlosser went to prison but got let out. When he got out he wrote two other books about nuclear weapons and the prison industry.

Charles Wilson grew up in West Virginia and has written articles for numerous publications such as the, New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Economist.

persuisive paragraph essay: Rich people

Do you think rich people should pay higher taxes? Rich people have more money. Rich people are more fortunate beacause they have money. The rich make more money, so they should pay higher taxes. Rich people really do need to pay higher.

Firstly, rich people have more money than other people, so it's only fair that they pay higher taxes. Rich people usually inherit there money, so if they pay higher taxes maybe they could just inherit more money. Rich people have better jobs than middle class, Middle class work just as hard but the rich take all the money and that's unfair. Rich people do have a lot of money and they don't share it which is greedy and unfair.

Secondly, Rich people have a lot of money and so they mostly have better things than other people, which makes them fortunate. Rich people are mostly born with money so that leads them up to more and more money. Rich people usually have rich parents, so if the rich pay higher taxes their parents could lend them more money. Rich people are so fortunate.

Thirdly, Rich people make a lot of money . Rich people have and make more money so they should pay a whole lot more money. Rich people keep making more money so they should keep paying more money. Rich people should pay more money so other people have money for schools and communities.

If the rich people of the world keep making more money they should be responsible for paying higher taxes. Rich people should pay higher taxes because they have more money. Rich people are more fortunate. Since rich people make more they should really pay more.

5 Paragraph Persuasive Essay Practice

Sophie,The best Cold Person there Ever Was!

When I grow up I think I'd make a great cold person. One of my favorite things to do is have my teeth chatter a lot. I even have some experience at freezing my hands off. coldness comes naturally to me, I like coldness and I live in cold temperature, Therefore, I will be the best Cold person that ever was!
Coldness has always come naturally to me. There was this one time when I was ice cold for a week. I'm always freezing, ice cold, and shivering. Whenever I am cold,I am freezing. Being able to be cold all the time is the first step along the path to becoming a cold person.
Liking coldness is another thing I really enjoy. It's so exciting to like the coldness. When I'm liking coldness I feel like a icicle. I am to liking coldness, what Peyton Manning is to football.Being able to like coldness for the rest of my life would be awesomely cold!
Living in cold temperature takes special talent. I gained a lot of experience at living in cold temperature because I live in Sitka and Anchorage. I learned a lot about the cold the cold temperature. For example,I live in cold temperatures. The time I spent living in cold temperature is sure to give me an advantage when it comes to becoming a cold person.
The three most important ingredients required in order to become a successful cold person are having coldness come naturally to you, liking coldness, and living in cold temperarure, and I've got them all! I want to be a very cold person. I'm never so happy as when I'm in the midst of being very cold. It's like Catherine Bell said,"I love cold weather".When I am cold,I am happy, and that's why I'll be the best cold person there ever was!

book review:Princess Academy

The book I read was Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. This book is about a 14 year old girl named Miri who lives on Mt.Eskel  in a quarry village. Everyone in the village works in the quarry except Miri who is too small and her Dad won't let her. Life for Miri and the village girls is interrupted when the Prince from Danland must marry. One day a messenger arrives sent by the king telling the villagers their daughters 12 to 17 must attend the princess academy to get perpared to meet the prince. Miri and the village girls are escorted by the kings soldiers up the mountain to the princess academy. All the girls go through lessons like reading and writing and it turns out Miri likes learning. The girls go to a ball and get to meet and dance with the prince but after meeting all the girls the prince is undecided on who to choose and goes back to the castle with promises of return. Then bandits show up and try to kidnap the chosen princess but because no princess was chosen the bandits hold all of them hostage. After the girls escape from the bandits the prince finally returns, chooses a princess,Britta, and the prince takes Britta home to the castle.

The theme of this book is its important to be brave so you can stand up for those who aren't brave. In one part Miri stands up for a girl named Frid who stands up to Olana when Olana says only Katar and Miri can return home but Miri ends up bringing the whole class home for winter break. Example is when the girls didn't want to escape the bandits because they were afraid but Miri convinced the girls to run. This example involves Marda, Miri's sister, Marda had to be brave and skin rabbits instead of Miri.

I really liked this book because it was written and described well with lots of detail. It didn't have a lot of humor but it had a nice emotional moments. This book had some romance so it would be good for people who like romance in books. I could connect this book to other books I've read. I would recommend this book to other 7th graders because it was a nicely detailed book.
